A teacher forced her students to slap and beat another Muslim student in northern India, according to an incident captured in a viral video that sparked a wave of outrage in the Asian country on Saturday.
The assaulted seven-year-old boy cries as several of his classmates take turns slapping him, urged on by the teacher at an educational center in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, Trapta Tyagi, according to images shared on social media.
“I have already said that all Muslim children should leave“Tyagi says in the video, recorded by an unidentified man in the Muzaffarnagar district who answers that the teacher “you are right, they are ruining education“.
One of the students gives the young man a new slap, to the laughter of the man recording. Tyagi, for his part, asks the aggressor student “why does he hit him like that”.
“Hit him harder. Who’s turn is it?“continues the teacher.
The assault was carried out to punish the young Muslim student for failing to learn the multiplication tables, according to Muzaffarnagar Police Superintendent Satyanarayan Prajapat.
“We have investigated and found out that the woman stated in the video that Muslim students are spoiled by their mothers and do not pay attention to their studies.the officer said in a video statement.
Police have filed charges against the teacher. Initially, the victim’s father stated that he would stop sending his son to school but would not file a complaint, according to statements reported by the Indian Express newspaper.
The event has generated a wave of indignation in the Asian country, where politicians and citizens have denounced what happened in Muzaffarnagar amid a growing atmosphere of hatred against minorities, especially Muslims, who represent around 15% of the Indian population.
