Somalia: al-Shabaab rebels attack government headquarters in Mogadishu | Africa

According to the ambulance service agency and witnesses, a large explosion occurred on January 22 at the gate of the Mogadishu mayor’s office. Somaliafollowed by several gunshots at the scene.

At least 16 injured people have been removed from the scene, Aamin Abdikadir Abdirahman, head of the Ambulance Service Authority, said.

Fighting continues in the area and it is difficult for ambulances to reach the scene.

Archyde.com news agency quoted an intelligence source as saying that security forces had immediately sealed off the area, but fighting between army forces and gunmen was still ongoing.

Meanwhile, an employee at Mogadishu government headquarters said the attack began with a suicide bomb, after which gunmen entered the building and engaged security forces.

The Mogadishu Mayor’s office is located in the local government headquarters building in the capital, Mogadishu, in a heavily guarded area.

The roads in this area have concrete barriers and many barriers. This building is just 1.5km from the Office of the President of Somalia.

Al-Shabaab regularly conducts cases bomb and attacked targets in Mogadishu as well as across Somalia.
