South Carolina women’s basketball: Kamilla Cardoso on Paris experience

South Carolina women’s basketball center Kamilla Cardoso discusses the Gamecocks’ trip to Paris and youth clinic hosted with UnderArmour on Saturday.

For the second time in as many games in the young 2023-24 season, the South Carolina women’s basketball team will face a top-15 opponent.

Six days after throttling No. 10 Notre Dame in their season-opener in Paris, the No. 4 Gamecocks will return stateside to take on No. 11 Maryland on Sunday at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

Coach Dawn Staley’s team tipped off its season as well as conceivably possible, blowing out the Fighting Irish 100-71 in a matchup of projected national title contenders heading into the season. In the win, center Kamilla Cardoso had a team-high 20 points and 15 rebounds while freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley impressed in her first college game, tallying 17 points, six assists and six steals.

Though it’s ranked behind the Notre Dame team South Carolina just beat by 29, Maryland could present a challenge. Last season, the Terrapins went 28-7 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Once there, they lost to South Carolina 86-75 in what was the Gamecocks’ closest game on their road to the Final Four.

South Carolina and Maryland have played seven times since the 1997-98 season, with the Gamecocks leading the all-time series 5-2. That mark includes two wins last season – the Elite Eight victory and an 81-56 blowout on November 11, 2022 in College Park, Maryland.
