Lucerne: Over 3000 lightning bolts

Shortly before nine o’clock on Tuesday the time had come: the rain poured down over Lucerne – and some lightning. MeteoNews Switzerland even spoke on Twitter of “real fireworks” in north-western and central Switzerland. On Wednesday morning, SRF Meteo announced that over 70,000 lightning bolts were counted in Switzerland. Reto Vögeli from MeteoNews says opposite PilatusTodaythat 3000 lightning bolts were counted in the canton of Lucerne alone.

The federal government had already warned accordingly on Tuesday afternoon and increased the probability of severe storms to the highest red level in large parts of the country.

According to “Blick”, there were also dangerous situations. A train in Lucerne had to put on an emergency brake. A reader reporter reports of a tree falling on the tracks. The incident happened according to “Blick” in the Seefeld district. There were no injuries.

On the Langensandstrasse in Lucerne, it has also knocked down an old district fir tree, as reported by 20 minutes. Buses would therefore no longer run. The Lucerne police confirmed at the request of PilatusToday and Tele 1 several calls because of the thunderstorm. No further details can be announced yet.

The wind raged accordingly on Tuesday evening in the city of Lucerne and throughout the canton. The storm also caused various damage to houses and cars in Sempach Station and the city of Lucerne. In the Sursee area, a fallen tree caused irregular public transport operations, as this picture shows:

After 9:15 p.m., the situation calmed down a bit in the Lucerne area. As the Lucerne police announced, over 70 reports were received on Tuesday evening. These mainly concerned broken branches, fallen building barriers and trees. In Ebikon, a construction team fell onto the roof of a gas station. The Lucerne police have not received any reports of injured persons.

Train: boat sunk in port

Things looked a little different in the canton of Zug. It was probably just getting started there at that point. “Today 9:15 p.m. between Cham-Rotkreuz,” writes a reader of this video. The storm in Central Switzerland hit her directly on the way home:

The municipality of Steinhausen was not spared from the storm either:

As reported by the Zug police, a boat sank in the harbor due to the thunderstorm. The boatman was able to swim to shore independently. In total, the fire brigade and police forces in the canton of Zug had to deploy 47 times. The A14 autobahn between Walterswil and Baar had to be temporarily closed due to a hanging tree.

“I haven’t realized it yet”: man can save himself from a sinking boat in a thunderstorm. In the video he talks about the moment of horror.

Driving on the A8 was also dangerous: from Sarnen in the direction of Brienz there was a risk of fallen trees between Kaiserstuhl and Lungern-Nord. It was similar between Alpnach-Süd and Alpnach-Nord on the A8 Sarnen in the direction of Hergiswil, as reported by the Viasuisse traffic information service.

Schwyz: Over 30 emergency calls

The storm was also noticeable in the canton of Schwyz. As reported by the Schwyz canton police, trees fell on the streets in numerous towns. In Altendorf, scaffolding threatened to fall onto the railway tracks. As a result, rail operations were suspended for a short time. A boat sank in Immensee after filling up with water.

Lightning struck the roof of a residential building in Seewen in the morning. The top two floors were damaged. The five people who were in the house were able to leave it independently and unharmed. The Schwyz fire brigade was able to quickly contain the smoke and prevent the fire from breaking out.
