Street Charging Stations in Granby: Extending the Electric Vehicle Network for Citizens

These new terminals, which will serve 14 parking spaces in total, will meet a need, says Mayor Julie Bourdon. The region (the cities of Cowansville, Granby and Bromont in particular) topped the rankings for the percentage of vehicle electrification in Quebec and Canada, La Voix de l’Est reported last spring.

“We have several charging stations in public parking lots, notes the mayor. What we’re doing is adding charging stations on the street. This allows overnight charging for vehicle owners who do not necessarily have access to private power outlets. And, by day, the locations chosen are strategic.”

Segments of Swett, Lafontaine, Saint-Joseph, Racine and Victoria streets will host these new 240V terminals next month. “Swett Street, for example, is near the residential area and Daniel-Johnson Park. Victoria Street is close to offices and the downtown entertainment venue. Rue Saint-Joseph is near the Cégep, rue Lafontaine, near the hospital center, and rue Racine, near residences for the elderly.

The objective is to “extend” a new network to offer “another service” to citizens. Because the popularity of electric vehicles is well established, underlines Julie Bourdon.

Grant

The total project costs are $372,000. Granby, however, obtained financial assistance of $168,000 from Hydro-Québec, underlines Ms. Bourdon. The state corporation has put forward a subsidy program for municipalities to allow the addition of 4,500 terminals to facilitate the charging of electric vehicles in urban centers.

The work will be carried out by Bertrand Ostiguy, of Shefford. The latter submitted the lowest bid, at a cost of $335,000. The elected officials awarded the contract last July.

For the rest, Julie Bourdon affirms that “everything will have to be reassessed”. The installation of new terminals will be carried out according to “needs and demand”, she said, pointing out that several municipal buildings (aquatic center, town hall, place de la Gare, fire station, interpretation center de la nature du lac Boivin) already have this type of development.
