For his first holiday in 11 years, Neil was looking for the perfect place for his family and found a villa to rent near Alicante. Length of stay ? Two weeks during the month of July 2023.

On the rental site, the villa, which has four bedrooms, a swimming pool, a sauna, a jacuzzi and a large outdoor area, displays a surprising price of 1,800 euros.

A caution

Despite this, Neil is reassured when he calls the advertiser to discuss the dates. The father even pays a deposit of 180 euros via TransferGo. The rest of the amount is to be paid upon arrival on site.

However, as soon as he arrives, the family becomes disillusioned. Although Neil had been told that the family would be picked up at the villa, no one came to pick them up at the airport.

“I feel so stupid”

After several phone calls, the father of the family quickly realizes: he has been the victim of a scam and must find another accommodation. Race results? 2,800 euros paid for a new villa and 125 euros for the trip, to which are added 325 euros for the rental of a car.

“For us it’s not that he cheated us out of a lot of money – the bail was €180,” he told the Daily Mirror. “It was the stress and worry of arriving with nothing and spending 1,500 euros more just to be able to stay somewhere”.

“I feel so stupid,” he concludes. “It has affected my well-being and my mental health – I feel so ridiculous. I feel so stupid, it’s affected my well-being and my mental health – I feel so ridiculous. We just tried to get the most out of the trip for the kids.
