This is a provincial decision that should quickly have repercussions elsewhere. Since this Tuesday, May 2, a new circular has been adopted in East Flanders and it is intended to be stricter with prohibited behavior while driving.
As the Nieuwsblad reports, drivers who are caught using their phone while driving will immediately have their driving license revoked for 15 days (compared to 8 days previously).
Indeed, text messages sent at a red light, calls while driving… have become scenes that occur too often on our roads. A recent study has shown that one out of four Belgian drivers reads or sends messages while driving. An unnecessary distraction that can have serious consequences, the phone while driving being considered a “traffic killer”, 8% of accidents are linked to it.
In East Flanders, additional checks will therefore be organized and the police will make these behaviors one of their priorities.
