Study highlights quality and readability of Apple Watches ECG feature

One new study analyzed the accuracy in detecting atrial fibrillation (A-fib) using smart wearable devices such as the Apple Watch. Maçã’s smartwatch, it is worth remembering, is one of those that has an electrocardiogram (ECG) feature — an exam that records the time and intensity of the electrical signals that make the heart beat and which is considered essential for diagnosing A-fib.

With the aim of comparing the ability to interpret data from Single Lead Electrocardiograms (SL-ECGs) by different groups of healthcare professionals — such as cardiologists, residents and medical students — the researchers used five different devices to obtain diagnoses: the Apple Watch, Fitbit Sense, KardiaMobile, Samsung Galaxy Watch and Withings ScanWatch.

Each of the 450 participants had to interpret up to 50 SL-ECGs from 10 different patients using the aforementioned devices, classifying them into the “sinus rhythm”, “atrial fibrillation” or “inconclusive” categories. Subsequently, the classifications were compared with diagnoses from two independent cardiologists obtained using 12-Lead Electrocardiograms — more accurate than Single-Lead Electrocardiograms.

Despite concluding that more experienced professionals are more efficient in analyzing SL-ECG data, the study showed that the smart device used did not interfere with the accuracy of atrial fibrillation detection. However, 203 (45%) and 226 (50%) of the participants stated that the data obtained by the Apple Watch has better quality and readability, respectively.
