Switzerland Joins EU Sanctions Against Russia: Impact on Import and Export

Switzerland, which previously supported part of the 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia, will join other sanctions measures from this list from February 1. About this on January 31 reports TASS.

The decision to expand anti-Russian measures was made on Wednesday by the Swiss Federal Council (the country’s government). However, Switzerland is not a member of either the EU or NATO. Nevertheless, the country declares a “gradual ban on the purchase and import of Russian diamonds.” New bans on imports from Russia also apply to cast iron and liquefied gas.

The 12th package of sanctions against Russia includes a reporting regime on transfers of funds by companies registered in the European Union that are controlled by Russian citizens. The Swiss Federal Council has so far decided not to introduce such a “declaration obligation in Switzerland,” but has commissioned a study into “the feasibility of creating a reporting system for transfers of funds to third countries.”

Let us recall that on December 18, 2023, the European Union approved the 12th package of sanctions against Russia. From January 1, 2024, the EU introduced restrictions on the import of non-industrial diamonds mined, processed or produced in Russia, and from March 1 – on diamonds that were processed in third countries. Restrictions also affected the supply of aluminum products, including wire, foil and pipes.

New export restrictions also affected dual-use products and technology. The list of goods prohibited for delivery to Russia includes lithium batteries, thermostats, electric motors and servos for drones, as well as various parts for aviation and weapons.

The EU has also banned Russian citizens from holding senior positions in European companies related to cryptocurrencies.
