Switzerland has added additional people, companies and organizations to its sanctions list in connection with the Russian attack on Ukraine. And the Federal Council wants to soon deal with the twelfth sanctions package decided by the EU.

The Department of Economics, Education and Research (WBF) put 61 additional people and 86 companies and organizations on the sanctions list, as it wrote today. Their assets in Switzerland must be blocked and reported to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco). Travel sanctions also apply to those affected.

Among those newly sanctioned are members of the Belarusian armed forces, leaders of military industrial enterprises and members of Russia’s Central Election Commission. The newly listed companies and organizations are primarily Russian defense companies.

On December 18, the EU decided on what is now the twelfth sanctions package in connection with the attack on Ukraine. Among other things, this provides for gradual import bans for diamonds from Russia and originating in Russia.

According to the WBF, imports of Russian diamonds into Switzerland have declined massively since the beginning of the war. Direct imports of natural and synthetic diamonds from Russia would no longer take place.

In addition to the diamond ban, the twelfth EU sanctions package plans to tighten the price cap for Russian oil exports to third countries, which has recently had little effect. The price cap is actually intended to force Russia to sell oil to buyers in other countries for a maximum of $60 per barrel in the future.

The Federal Council was informed about these sanctions today by WBF head Guy Parmelin. According to the statement, he will deal with a possible takeover of the package “promptly”. In principle, the Federal Council adheres to the EU sanctions, but is examining the individual measures according to previous information.
