Taxpayer-Funded Styling Expenses: Angela Merkel’s Lavish Makeover Billed to the People

This bill has been washed… and blow-dried, made up and styled!

Despite the end of her term of office, the federal government continues to pay for the styling of former Chancellor Angela Merkel (69, CDU). And not too tight: since the end of her term of office, 55,000 euros have already been collected for professional help with hair and make-up!

The Federal Chancellery now explained this at the request of the “Tagesspiegel”.

► In 2023 alone, the government had to shell out 17,200 euros for Merkel’s styling, in 2022 it was a total of 37,780 euros. That makes around 3000 euros – per month! There are also costs if the stylist accompanies Merkel on trips.

As the “Tagesspiegel” reported at the end of June, Merkel has a freelance hair and make-up artist at her side – even for non-public appointments. At that time, the Chancellery did not want to give any information on the amount of the costs.

A well-coiffed former chancellor – at the expense of the taxpayer!

The taxpayers’ association was alarmed! It was “hard to convey to the taxpayers that they should also pay for politicians’ make-up artists and hairstylists,” said Reiner Holznagel (47), President of the Taxpayers’ Association. The costs for this would have to be “reduced to the bare minimum and, if in doubt, paid privately”.

According to the Federal Chancellery, the beauty costs are “necessary expenses” within the meaning of the Federal Budget Code, which the federal government may make to fulfill its tasks.

But the current government is also paying a lot for its good appearance, as the taxpayers’ association has calculated: in 2022, the costs for photographers, hairdressers and make-up artists have risen to 1.5 million euros – almost 80 percent more than the year before, when the GroKo was still there reigned.
