Telecoms: Spanish giant Telefonica will lay off a third of its workforce

An austerity cure of rare magnitude is being prepared at Telefonica. The historic telecoms operator in Spain will cut up to 5,100 jobs in the country by 2026, or a third of its workforce, according to initial information given Monday by management to the unions. At the Spanish giant, although accustomed to social plans, this is almost unheard of.

According to management, these job cuts should allow the operator to “adapt” its structure to the “required transformation process.” […] by the new digital era.
