Tesla has lowered the price in France of its Model Y, the enlarged version of the Model 3 sedan. The Propulsion version with the small battery now starts at €42,990, the Long autonomy version starts at €49,990 and the Performance model goes up to €55,990. That is a reduction of €3,000 on the first two variants and even €4,000 on the most powerful model in the range. Enough to respond to new competition, particularly European this time, since Renault and Peugeot have presented two electric SUVs at fairly aggressive prices.
The price of the Model Y has never been so low in France, even if the exact amount paid by the customer is not yet known. Note that only the white color is offered, black is again an option at €1,300.
With these new prices, the Model Y Propulsion is sold at the same price as the Model 3 and the Grande Autonomie is even a thousand euros cheaper. Tesla has never been in a range logic, so this is not a surprise and this has already been the case in the past. It is nevertheless interesting to see it and a reminder that this car classified in the SUV category is the vehicle best sold by the manufacturer worldwide. It’s even one of the best-selling cars and even if it’s not yet official because a few figures are missing, the Model Y should be the best-selling car in Europe for the year 2023.
A status which will perhaps change in 2024, however. While Tesla had no competitor in its price range until then, European manufacturers decided to attack. Back to back, Renault with its Scenic E-Tech et Peugeot with its new e-3008 have decided to make an impression with particularly aggressive attack prices. This is especially true for the first which is priced from €39,990, with a price tag much lower than Tesla where everything is standard, of course, but with a technical sheet that is not unworthy. For its part, the Stellantis brand officially starts at €44,990, with a larger battery and better theoretical autonomy than the American.

We do not yet know what the two French cars are worth, even though we know the Model Y Propulsion by heart, so the comparisons remain theoretical at this stage. In any case, there is little doubt that Tesla reacted to these lower than expected prices, even if its car is significantly larger and almost in another segment. In any case, all the prices given here are excluding bonuses due to a government oddity: while the month of January is well underway, we still do not know the exact terms of the 2024 bonus.
The government wanted to reserve it for cars which received a sufficiently low environmental score, calculated according to complicated rules to exclude production outside Europe and especially in China. The three cars mentioned here all remain eligible, with Tesla benefiting first of its German factory to produce the Model Y Propulsion there for the French market. The exact amount is not officially known, although we should initially stay at €5,000. Which would give us a car at €37,990, not far from the best historical prices of the Model 3.
Tesla is expected to update its Model Y in the coming months, on the same model as the Model 3, whose design was revised in the fall both outside and inside. We expect the same changes, namely reworked lights as well as better sound insulation on the exterior and a new, even more refined interior, without levers behind the steering wheel and with ventilated seats, to cite a few examples of the adjustments made .
