Work has started on the transformation of the former Whirlpool factory in Naples in via Argine, into a modern hub of systems for the production of alternative energy. The Italian Green Factory of the Tea Tek group will establish the new company on an area of 53 thousand square metres. Of the five existing factory buildings, four will be completely demolished, while the office building will be redeveloped. In total, investments of 70 million are planned. The definition of a development contract has been awaited for some time.
«Today is a truly exciting day – said Felice Granisso, CEO of Italian Green Factory (Tea Tek group), commenting on the opening of the construction site». The works have been entrusted to Ecooffice which will start from the dismantling of the photovoltaic shelters.
Reshoring of productions from abroad
The Italian Green Factory is a great challenge: from an industrial point of view it will carry out the reshoring of strategic productions in the field of renewable energy, i.e. solar trackers and transformers for power skids. «From an environmental point of view it will be a point of reference for the country’s energy transition: the factory itself will be an example for self-production of energy and environmental redevelopment thanks to the removal of asbestos and the planting of trees on the perimeter of the area », announced Granisso.
300 former Whirlpool workers absorbed
The new company established specifically for the relaunch of the household appliances site has already absorbed around 300 former Whirlpool workers who will soon be trained to work on the new productions. But the factory – according to the illustrated programs – will also be a place open to the community and to the neighborhood in the eastern area of Naples, which today bears the heavy signs of deindustrialisation. «We would like to redevelop the neighborhood – says Granisso – creating new jobs, bringing research initiatives there. We intend to connect to the excellence of the university world and private companies.” The new factory will have sports and recreational facilities and will be equipped with a kindergarten.
The company studies a plan to produce as soon as possible
The company expects to carry out the works in the expected 24 months, but also expects to be able to adopt an acceleration plan: for this purpose it involves bringing forward the work at another site, again in the province of Naples.
