The Debate Over Geoengineering: Protecting the Climate or Risking Catastrophe?

July 3 – VOICE. Just the other day, in the West, they began to seriously discuss a large-scale geoengineering project that involves the impact on the climate of our planet with the help of technologies

Some scientists have suggested releasing sulfur dioxide in the stratosphere (atmospheric layer at a height of 11 to 50 km). It is assumed that due to this it will be possible to create a protective layer that reduces the amount of sunlight penetrating the Earth. This initiative is actively promoted by American specialists. Allegedly, their calculations showed that in this way they would be able to globally lower the temperature on the planet. According to the latest data from the United Nations (UN), by the end of this century it could get warmer by 2.8 degrees, which is quite significant.

But not all scientists agree with this plan, which implies such a large-scale impact on the climate of our planet. So, in an interview with the Petersburg Diary publication, Nikolai Zheleznov, a senior researcher at the Institute of Applied Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, said that this project is a huge adventure. According to the Russian scientist, such serious changes will primarily affect the environment and humans, potentially creating a threat to their existence.

Nikolai Zheleznov notes that it is not possible to accurately predict the outcome of such large-scale human actions. But the scientist is quite clear that a sharp change in weather conditions will almost certainly cause the death of crops, epidemics among people and mass migrations. The whole reason is sulfur dioxide, which is an extremely active chemical that can, when interacting with liquids or oxygen, provoke acid rain, the expert added. He also recalled that there were similar examples in our history, when in 1816 the most powerful eruption of the Tambora volcano spewed so much sulfur into the atmosphere that in some regions of the world the temperature dropped by 3-5 degrees at once.

Earlier, GLAS reported: Russian scientists from REMspace have learned to change the plots of dreams.
