The entrepreneurial fabric in the Casablanca-Settat region under the magnifying glass

Established on the basis of data stopped at the end of 2019 and the end of 2020 for employment, the study shows that this region concentrated, at the end of these two years, nearly 30.7% of the total of declared companies, at the regional level, to the DGI (Direction Générale des Impôts) or to the CNSS (National Social Security Fund) or to the OMPIC (Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property)or 175,653 active companies, 87.6% of which are micro-enterprises with an individual turnover of less than 3 million dirhams.

In addition, 78% of businesses in this region are concentrated in the prefecture of Casablanca. At the sectoral level, more than 48% of companies operated in trade and construction in 2019.

The study by the TPME Observatory thus highlights that 33.3% of companies operating in the Casablanca-Settat region come under the “Trade; repair of automobiles and motorcycles”, followed by those of “Construction”, “Specialised, scientific and technical activities” and “Manufacturing industry” with 15%, 11.1% and 7.7% respectively.

By branch of activity, certain sub-branches concentrate a large number of active companies, including the “Trade; repair of automobiles and motorcycles” which, at the end of 2020, had 56,185 companies.

By business category, the study highlights, in 2019, the preponderance of micro-businesses with a turnover (CA) of between 0 and 1 million dirhams, thus constituting 78% of the total workforce of these businesses. This proportion is limited to 9.6% for companies whose turnover is between 1 and 3 million dirhams.

Medium and large companies, meanwhile, accounted for only 1% and 0.5% respectively of this total.

Another result of the study: the distribution of companies active in Casablanca-Settat according to their legal forms shows the preponderance of SARLs (Limited Liability Companies) with a share of 39.8% in the total workforce.

Low business creation in 2019 compared to 2018

Quoting the OMPIC barometer, the study shows that 94,966 companies were created in 2019, an increase of 2.2% against 16.8% in 2018. In this figure (94,966), 14,142 companies Legal Persons (PM ) were born in the Casablanca-Settat region. 85.2% of the creations of these companies were recorded at the level of the prefecture of Casablanca in 2019. It is followed by the prefecture of Mohammedia and the province of El Jadida with respective shares of 5.7% and 3, 1%.

By sector of activity, 65.3% of creations were created in three sectors: “commerce; automobile and motorcycle repair”, “construction” and “specialised, scientific and technical activities”, with respective losses of 33.6%, 19% and 12.7%.

The said study also points out that 2,379 companies were being dissolved at the end of 2019 in the Casablanca-Settat region.

The provincial breakdown of these dissolutions reveals the predominance of the prefecture of Casablanca, which alone accounts for 87% of the total.

The study also underlines that three sectors total a share of 67.4% of these anticipated dissolutions. The “Trade; repair of automobiles and motorcycles” holds the largest share with 36%.

By age group of anticipated dissolutions of PMs, the study shows the predominance of companies whose age is between 2 and 5 years with a share of 35.7%, followed by companies whose age is between 5 and 10 years with a share of 28.7%.

The EPMAs (Enterprises Legal Persons) and the EPPAs (Active Physical Enterprises) in the Casablanca-Settat region generated a turnover totaling nearly 1042 billion dirhams for the 2019 financial year, of which a 33.1% share generated by VSMEs and 66.9% by large companies (GE), according to the same source. And to add that nearly 92% of the turnover of these companies is generated by the prefecture of Casablanca, followed by the prefecture of Mohammedia (2.6%).

More than 60% of the workforce declared to the CNSS are employed by VSMEs

The study ofOMTPME shows, on the other hand, that the prefecture of Casablanca concentrated 88.4% of the declared workforce in 2020, down 0.4 points compared to 2019. Conversely, the province of Settat saw its share increase by 0.3 point over the same period to settle at 1.2% in 2020. Knowing that this study concerns 89,320 companies affiliated with the CNSS in 2020 having declared a total of 1,496,582 employees, against 85,096 companies and 1,542,130 employees in 2019.

It follows that “Administrative and support service activities” are the leading provider of employment with a share of 21%, and 84.1% of businesses in the region have a workforce of no more than 10 employees.

The Observatory study also shows that VSMEs employed more than 63% of the workforce declared to the CNSS, against 73.1% nationally. Here too, more than 88% of these jobs were concentrated at the level of the prefecture of Casablanca.

This analysis also reveals that VSMEs with a seniority of more than 5 years occupied, in 2020, 54.7% of total declared jobs, down 1.1 points compared to 2019. This proportion is 36, 4% for GE, with a drop of 0.5 points.

It also shows that the total payroll of the Casablanca-Settat region amounts to 84.5 billion dirhams. 39.6% of this mass is accounted for by companies employing a workforce of more than 500 employees. Still, trade and manufacturing industry drain nearly 35.4% of this mass of Casablanca-Settat.

Heavy impact of the Covid on the number of companies affiliated to the CNSS

CNSS data show that the Covid-19 crisis caused, in 2020, a 48.1% drop in the number of companies affiliated to the CNSS as well as a decline in declared jobs of 33.4%, against respectively 48.3% and 35.4% nationally.

Fortunately, the relaxation of health rules in July 2020 had an immediate impact both on the number of affiliated companies and on the declarations of Casablanca-Settat jobs, which returned to levels almost similar to those of July 2019. , excluding companies operating in the “Accommodation and catering” sectors, whose affiliation acts fell by 7.7%.
