It was a clear spring evening that of April 10, 1991when in the Livorno harbor, at 10.25 pm, the ferry Moby Prince of the Navarma collided with the Agip Abruzzo, a Snam tanker, 2.7 miles from the coast.

It was hell: 140 passengers and crew of the Moby died. He was saved alone Alessio Bertrand, hub of the ferry which, having left at 10pm, was headed to Olbia. Everyone safe on the Agip ship. It was the greatest tragedy of the Italian navy, so far without culprits and with many mysteries.
The bow of the Moby penetrated the tanker number 7 of the oil tanker: the crude oil poured onto the ferry which transformed into an immense torch with the ignition of the flames, perhaps caused by the friction of the sheets of metal. There are various hypotheses as to why it happened: fog, speeding, an explosion, a failure in the on-board equipment.
Help certainly arrived late: the ferry was only spotted at 11.35pm. An ‘Ustica del mare’ for the families of the victims who, after decades of investigations, trials and distorted and demolished truths, continue to ask that Parliament investigate further to clarify things once and for all. A first parliamentary commission worked to shed light on the tragedy. The conclusions, arrived in 2018, also led to the reopening of the investigations by the Livorno prosecutor’s office.
