The Surprising Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar: Antibacterial Properties, Blood Sugar Control, and Weight Loss

We often hear about the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, as some people report information about its role in adjusting blood sugar levels, reducing inflammation, losing weight, and improving cholesterol levels.

According to the Guardian newspaper, Darshna Yagnik, an immunologist and lecturer in biomedical sciences at Middlesex University, issued a research paper showing that apple cider vinegar kills Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, with the same effectiveness as common antibiotics.

This study, and its findings, is one of many promising findings in recent research on the benefits of apple cider vinegar.

The importance of this food product lies in the fact that it contains different proteins, enzymes and bacteria, in addition to acetic acid.

Antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar

Although Yagnik’s findings are compelling, it’s not enough to recommend that you should take apple cider vinegar.

“I started researching different ways vinegar could act on bacteria and microbes,” she said. “I wasn’t surprised by the results.”

Yagnik also infused white blood cells in apple cider vinegar. It turned out that she was able to clear the infection much more quickly than usual, “so it seems to work on immunity as well.”

While studying the effects on cells, the researcher saw signs that apple cider vinegar could help reduce inflammation, too.

Controlling blood sugar levels

In the same vein, researchers found an effect of apple cider vinegar on blood sugar. A group of studies in 2019 concluded that consuming this substance daily leads to lower levels of glucose in the blood during fasting, as well as lower cholesterol.

A 2004 study of people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes found that consuming apple cider vinegar after a high-carb meal reduced the rise in blood sugar.

This means that this product may be useful, along with medications, in controlling blood sugar for people with type 2 diabetes.

However, vinegar is not recommended medically, as it can cause problems with blood sugar control for people with type 1 diabetes.

Apple cider vinegar diet for weight loss

While weight loss studies are small and inconsistent, and only give a short-term picture, one found that people who drank 30ml of vinegar per day lost, on average, 1.5kg more than the rest.

Also, some of the participants in that study who took apple cider vinegar lost 12 kilograms over the course of 12 weeks without undergoing dietary restrictions.

In a previous interview with Al-Araby from Tunisia, nutritionist Maryam Tokabri explained that the apple cider vinegar diet is not scientific.

Tokabri pointed out that acetic acid is one of the most important components of apple cider vinegar, as it maintains the health of the digestive system and gets rid of germs.

Tokabri indicated that reducing the absorption of sugars and fats helps in losing weight in a healthy way.

And the nutritionist advised not to take apple cider vinegar daily, as it exacerbates reflux problems in the stomach, warning against taking it on an empty stomach.
