The Duchess of Sussex has rarely returned to the UK since stepping down from the royal family in 2020. However, fans were hoping she would return soon as her husband Prince Harry is set to appear at an event in London to celebrate their 10th anniversary in Invictus games.
Meghan’s presence at the event has yet to be “confirmed” and royal expert Charles Rae suggested she “will not set foot in the UK again”. These are the possible reasons for Meghan’s reluctance to return to Harry’s home country.
While Meghan hasn’t made many return trips to the UK since leaving the royal family in 2020, she did return with Harry for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. However, they didn’t get the warmest of receptions.
The Sussexes attended the national service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral as part of the celebrations. It was their first joint public appearance with the royal family in two years. A video of the couple leaving the service showed crowds booing them as they left St Paul’s Cathedral.
Meghan then decided not to go with her husband as he returned to the UK once again in May 2023 for the coronation of King Charles. US news presenter Megyn Kelly said Meghan did not go with Harry on the trip for fear of being booed again. “I really think the Duchess couldn’t stomach the thought of being booed,” he told Sky News Australia.
Additionally, Harry and Meghan no longer have a home in the UK after being evicted from Frogmore Cottage. The property had been given to the couple as a wedding gift by the Queen, however, King Charles served them with an eviction notice in early January last year.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex then returned the keys in June 2023, with the rest of their belongings being shipped to their new home in California, the Mirror reports. After being evicted from Frogmore, it was reported that Harry and Meghan would have to make a “private agreement” with the King if they wanted to stay in a royal home in the future.
Royal correspondent Charles Ray told the Sun: “I am of the opinion that Meghan will not set foot in the UK again. I just don’t think he wants anything to do with this country.”
His sentiments were echoed in Omid Scobie’s bombshell book Endgame. The writer claimed that Meghan “never felt at home” in the UK and it appeared to him that she “never wants to set foot in England again”. He also claimed he decided to skip the king’s coronation last May because he refuses to “dive back into the … soap opera”.
