Tobacco shrinks the brain

Daily smoking is linked to a reduction in brain volume, conclude American researchers after comparing brain images of more than 30,000 people. Their work was published in the journal Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science.

An effect proportional to the quantity of cigarettes smoked throughout one’s life

This effect, proportional to the quantity of cigarettes smoked during life, is more marked in the frontal cortex, the hippocampus, the thalamus and the amygdala. It is independent of genetic markers of smoking risk and could contribute to the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease observed in smokers.
