Top start of the future craftsmen’s village at Port Vauban: here’s what will change

And it screws, and it screws! This Thursday, Jean Leonetti and Jean-Pierre Savarino, president of Vauban 21, did not lay the first stone of the village of craftsmen of the port but… the first bolt!

There is a logic: the two future buildings, at the foot of Fort Carré, will be made of a removable metal frame.

First stage of the second phase of the port redevelopment project, therefore. Because the port infrastructure, built in the 1980s, has changed too little. And that a facelift is needed for Vauban, who sets himself the goal of being the “port of the third millennium”.

As a reminder, the Nice Côte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which took over the public service delegation in 2017, had undertaken to carry out a program of works to the tune of 135 million to bring the port to the taste of the day. It’s the least we can say.

Disappearance of old containers

After the new yacht club and the redevelopment of the Old Port, the entire visual identity of the fairing workshops, shipyard and floating purlins area will change. Absolutely! Gone are the old containers in which welders, electricians, painters and even mechanics had settled.

The new fairing building will take the place of the shipyard car park: 150 meters of workshops to accommodate professionals in modern premises, toilets for boaters, but also a shaded brasserie and a sales area for maritime hardware. All this, horizontal to the rampart, in durable materials, with a wooden frame. And it is still Philippe Prost who signs the architecture. The promenade and its benches, at the edge of the quay, will be made of stones.

Finally, the Fort Carré will also benefit from an improvement since the wall at the level of the lower enclosure will be cleared and a new staircase will connect the port to the promenade which goes around the monument.

Calendar side? We’re betting on spring 2024…
