The scene seems straight out of a movie. During the night from Sunday to Monday, a young Irish tourist, visibly intoxicated, climbed on a statue composed of a lion and a “genie with a torch” at the Brussels Stock Exchange. The scene, shared by the New York Post media on X (former Twitter) shows that the young boy breaks the arm of the hand holding the high roller.

The police then arrested the young man who had taken refuge in a fast-food restaurant near the monument.

Created by Jos Jacquet, this statue is part of a set of two monuments located at the entrance to the iconic building of the capital. This work is part of the 90 million euro renovation project of the Brussels Stock Exchange. After three years of work, the Stock Exchange was inaugurated just two days ago.

The project manager for the renovation of the Brussels Stock Exchange Nel Vandevennet explained to the VRT that “the repairs will be very expensive because the work will have to be carried out by real craftsmen. It is a classified heritage and there will be monitoring from the monuments and landscapes agency of the Brussels region.”
