2023-06-16 12:18:58

A fisherman in his twenties was found unresponsive in Carleton-sur-Mer, Gaspésie, a few hours after slipping into the water inadvertently.

The man was fishing in the company of another individual when the tragedy occurred around 1 a.m. on the night of Thursday to Friday. They were then on the tip of the sandbank located near the avenue du Phare.

“The fisherman would then have lost his footing and would have fallen into Chaleur Bay,” said Catherine Bernard, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The police force, assisted by the Canadian Armed Forces helicopter, crisscrossed the waters of the area to try to locate the victim, in vain.

It was finally the sector’s fire safety service that located the young man while he was raking the waters around 4:30 am.

The fisherman, unconscious, was transported to a hospital where there are fears for his life, indicates the SQ. Our sources say, however, that his death will be confirmed shortly.

Police investigators must analyze the scene to better understand the causes and circumstances that led to the tragedy.
