The events take place in West Flanders. Daniel set fire to the attic of his house on Monday. A little over a month ago, his wife Cécile died. She was 87 years old. Since then, he has been managing his 55-year-old son with a disability on his own, who lives with them.

After extinguishing the attic fire, firefighters found a large quantity of banknotes, strewn across most of the width of the attic.
Daniel is suspected of having scattered the money himself and setting it on fire before taking his own life. “Daniel was suspicious of everything and everyone, especially when it came to money,” say his acquaintances. “He was stubborn, but always had the best interests of his wife and son at heart. Cécile died of an illness in this house. Daniel did everything he could for her. Until the last moment, he continued to take care of her. But his death was an exceptionally hard blow for him.
Alone, Daniel could no longer cope with the care of their son who was living at home. He was depressed.
