Sunday afternoon, Mike Vanhove, a 33-year-old Belgian, left for his night job at the chip producer Agristo. His 26-year-old girlfriend Jana Bekaert and her one-year-old son didn’t think he wouldn’t return.

The native of Deerlijk, in West Flanders, died, stuck in a conveyor. Employees had noticed through surveillance cameras that a production system was down. On their way to the scene, they find Mike, in the treadmill. The firefighters arrive around 3 am but it is too late.

Jana, his partner, says: “In the middle of the night, people from victim support came to the door to announce the news”. “They still had all those dreams and still wanted to do so many things together. Yesterday, at a quarter past four, we saw Mike leave for work again and now he is at the funeral home, that is beyond belief,” adds Carline, Jana’s mother to the Nieuwsblad.

Several of Mike’s colleagues supported the family on social media: “Mike was always in a good mood, worked hard and carried his family at arm’s length. My daughter also works a lot and it was not easy to find a childcare solution for their little boy. That’s why Mike wanted to work weekends, so he could take more care of their baby during the week. Everything will change now”.

The scene of the accident has been placed under a warrant of committal. A legal expert and a doctor of law have been appointed by the public prosecutor. A social inspector from the Labor Control Inspectorate was on site.
