More than 20 people died this Wednesday in a vehicle accident in the southern state of Oaxaca, in Mexico, according to local media reports.

The passenger bus, which was traveling 331 miles from Mexico City to the Oaxacan municipality of Santiago Yosondua, located in the Mixteca area, in the west of the state, fell into a ravine.

Salomón Jara Cruz, governor of the state of Oaxaca, confirmed the tragedy on his Twitter account: “We deeply regret the accident that occurred in Magdalena Peñasco.”

“Personnel from our government are already working on the rescue actions and providing all the support to the injured people,” he added.

So far, the authorities have not officially reported the number of victims or the cause of the accident. However, journalistic versions speak of between 26 and 27 injured, who were transferred to a hospital.
