Tragic Loss: Matadi the Silverback Gorilla’s Sudden Disappearance Shakes the Zoo

His sudden disappearance is a painful ordeal for the ZOO. The silverback Matadi (20 years old) was taken from us unexpectedly yesterday, following a double respiratory tract infection (Covid 19 and Bordetella) which led to complications.

The gorilla had not been feeling well for some time. Like the females in the group, he was particularly cold. His nose was running, he coughed regularly and had difficulty breathing. The veterinarian and caregivers closely monitored his state of health. The females recovered quickly, while Matadi’s symptoms persisted. He felt weak and stopped eating. A sign that clearly indicated to veterinarian Jonas the need to intervene immediately. He describes Matadi as a caring gorilla. “During treatment, he sought contact without any aggressive reaction. He would come and sit next to me, about a meter away, when most animals would run away. » Veterinarian Jonas Spruyt.

Matadi’s health, however, deteriorated at an alarming rate. Despite cardiac massage and several resuscitation attempts with colleagues from Ghent University (specializing in medical imaging), the heart rhythm could not be regularized. Matadi left us in the presence of all his caregivers.

All the gorillas had the opportunity to say goodbye to this endearing animal who, despite his imposing appearance, was a particularly caring and gentle father to his daughters Thandie and Vizazi.

Matadi’s body is now being transferred to Ghent University for an autopsy and further scientific research into the shoulder and arm muscles. Our dear silverback will still be able to contribute significantly to science and veterinary medicine in particular, today and tomorrow.

“I will never forget the image of Matadi playing with his daughters,” underlines a Matadi caretaker. We do not yet know which female will take over from Matadi.
