A rare animal attack occurred in California recently. 21-year-old Taylen Brooks died trying to protect his younger brother who was attacked by a wild cougar, while his 18-year-old younger brother Wyatt Brooks survived, although his face was and neck injuries, but is expected to recover through surgery.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office in California, USA, recently announced that Tyron and Wyatt went hiking together in a remote area of El Dorado on March 23, hoping to find the fallen antlers. When they returned home to collect, they were walking on a dirt road when they saw a mountain lion walking towards them from a distance.
Tyron and Wyatt raised their hands, yelled, and even threw backpacks at the lion in an attempt to scare it away. However, after being frightened, the cougar not only did not run away, but instead pounced on Wyatt, biting his face with its jaws and killing him. Crushed to the ground. Wyatt tried to call 911 for help, but there was no cell phone signal in the area where the incident occurred. He was forced to run back to where the brothers parked their car to call 911, and then drove back to the scene of the attack, but the cougar and Tyron had disappeared.
When the police and paramedics arrived, the paramedics treated Wyatt, and the police found the cougar and Tyron nearby. They shot to scare away the cougar, but Tyron was already dead.
Wyatt was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent reconstructive surgery on his face and neck. He has now returned home to rest. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife hired a professional hunter who found the cougar a few hours later and euthanized it.

Tyron and Wyatt’s families said the brothers enjoyed enjoying the outdoors and hunted and fished together nearly every day. Tyron is a talented guitarist, while younger brother Wyatt is training to be a local firefighter. “He was a very kind and gentle man and will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” relatives expressed their condolences.
According to the U.S. State Department, cougar attacks on humans are rare, but they do occur. The last fatal cougar attack in California occurred in 2004.
