Train traffic was interrupted between Ath and Enghien, on the Brussels-Ath-Tournai line, due to a person colliding near Arbre (Ath), rail network manager Infrabel said this Tuesday evening. The incident, which concerns a train returning from Brussels, took place around 6:20 p.m., explained the Belga agency.

Emergency services are still on site and rail traffic is interrupted in both directions between Ath and Enghien. Trains are currently diverted through Jurbise, causing disruptions which might last part of the evening, according to Infrabel.

According to our information collected on site, the person hit by the train did not survive, despite the braking maneuver carried out by the driver. The victim was killed instantly. Firefighters, railway police and representatives of Infrabel are present at the scene of the tragedy. During the evening, Bruno Lefebvre, the mayor of Ath, also visited the site.
