UEFA has brought forward a Europa League fixture between French club Rennes and Greek side Olympiacos by 24 hours, shifting the match to Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 4:30 p.m. local time, following notification from French authorities that routine security arrangements cannot be guaranteed during a planned nationwide general strike.
Why Did UEFA Reschedule the Rennes and Olympiacos Match?
European football’s governing body took the decision after French trade unions called for a general strike on Nov. 5. The strike forms part of broader nationwide protests that originally ignited when students raised concerns over conditions in schools. According to public authorities in France, the expected disruption and security demands of the demonstrations meant standard matchday policing could not be assured in Rennes on the original Thursday date.
The revised 4:30 p.m. kick-off was specifically chosen to prevent an overlap with two UEFA Champions League fixtures slated for 6:45 p.m. Central European Time: Fenerbahçe against Liverpool, and AEK Athens against Real Madrid.

How Are Domestic French Fixtures Affected?
The unrest and subsequent security deployments have heavily impacted France’s domestic football calendar as well. The Professional Football League (LFP) previously moved a high-profile match between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais from Sunday, Oct. 25, to the following day.
Additional scheduling adjustments have been rolled out across Ligue 1 as police and public authorities prepare for marches and demonstrations. OGC Nice will host Stade Rennais on Friday, Oct. 30, Olympique Lyonnais will face Angers SCO on Sunday, Nov. 1, and FC Lorient will play Stade Brestois on Monday, Nov. 2, Euronews reported.

Why Are Supporters Angry About the New Kick-Off Time?
While safety officials prioritize logistical control, the altered schedule has left many matchgoers frustrated. A mid-week afternoon start has drawn sharp criticism from fans trying to balance work and attendance.
“A match at 4:30 pm on a Wednesday is not easy for everyone,” Romain, a 33-year-old Rennes supporter, told Euronews. While he noted he could make arrangements with his employer, others have found the sudden change entirely unmanageable. On the social media platform X, a supporter named Quentin stated he was “fuming with rage” at having “paid for a match [he] will not be able to attend.” Numerous other supporters echoed these sentiments under the club’s official announcement, labeling the adjustment a “disgrace” and a “lack of respect” toward the fanbase.
