Protection against discrimination is good, parental leave regulation, on the other hand, is only a cosmetic patch at the expense of women.

Vienna (OTS) “I’m really having a hard time with some of the new regulations,” comments Marion Polaschek, chairwoman of the independent trade union group in the ÖGB and women’s representative in the UGÖD, on the law introduced as an initiative motion in Parliament to implement the guideline on the compatibility of work and private life for parents and caregivers Relatives, or “work-life balance guideline” and explains: “As much as I am happy about every additional opportunity for fathers to get involved, I see this as more of a cosmetic patch that was quickly picked up, but not a milestone in the creation of gender equality.”

The main cornerstones are a mandatory division of parental leave between parents if they want to use the full 24-month framework, with the exception of single parents, and a doubling of the family bonus in the paternity month.

“Justice means having to think just as little or as much about how women reconcile everything and make their living financially like men,” says Marion Polaschek and demands: “What women need are more and not fewer legal rights and a different model of family and work: For example, a legal entitlement to a quality childcare place from the end of maternity leave. More money for the papal month is nice, but against the background of the still lack of appropriate compensation and social security for free care work, especially for women, it is a mockery.”

On the other hand, she is pleased about the extended protection against discrimination for all those who take parental leave, paternity leave or care leave: “Here, an equal basis is actually created and a structural problem is actively tackled, namely care work is socially upgraded.”

In conclusion, she wishes: “Politically responsible people finally do more than just renovate the status quo of injustices: for the benefit of women, more and more men and all types of families, even beyond the bourgeois ideal.”
