Ukraine began construction of two new nuclear power units

The fifth unit will be the first in the republic built according to the American design of the most modern pressurized water reactor AP1000. Its feature, as Galushchenko emphasized, is the ability to maneuver blocks, which is especially important against the backdrop of missile attacks on the country’s generating and balancing capacities.

The minister called such construction a response to those who want to deprive Ukrainians of light, and promised that new technologies will allow them to survive. “This is an extensive geopolitical project of common interest between Ukraine and the United States. The technologies that we will build and develop together will push the Russians out of the European nuclear energy market,” he emphasized.

In turn, Brink indicated that these two units will be the first of nine that Westinghouse plans to build in Ukraine. The head of Energoatom, Petr Kotin, added that after the launch of the units under construction, the Khmelnitsky NPP will become the largest in Europe and will take this status from the Zaporozhye NPP. Fragman recalled that all Ukrainian nuclear power units have already gotten rid of their dependence on Russian nuclear fuel, and the country’s cooperation with Westinghouse is only increasing.

At the end of January, Galushchenko claimed that Ukraine would launch the construction of four new power units in the summer or fall of 2024. However, work on the project was started earlier.
