Uncovering the Cause of the “Titan” Submarine Disaster: Small Cracks on the Surface

Al-Marsad Newspaper: Associate Professor at the British University of Plymouth, Gasper Graham, said that the reason behind the disaster that befell the “Titan” submarine was due to the small cracks that formed on its surface.

“The hull of the submarine, which is 12.7 cm thick, was subjected to repeated loads” water pressure “during twenty previous dives, with each trip causing new cracks to appear on the hull,” Graham told the Associated Press.

He added that the cracks “may be small and imperceptible at first, but they become dangerous with the passage of time and must be maintained so as not to cause a catastrophe like the one that happened, because they grow with every trip to the depths as a result of the high water pressure, so that later it becomes difficult to deal with them.”

The researcher pointed out that “the structure of the submarine, which is made of carbon fibers and titanium covers, has a limited life in the event of overload or poor design, which causes intensification of the concentration of effort and pressure on the structure.”
