It’s an everyday gesture that everyone is used to, throwing something into a public trash can in the street.

Jean-Louis, a resident of the north of Brussels, was walking in the town of Evere when he made this gesture which we no longer even think about because it is so innocuous.

However, we now observe different types of trash cans, an effort by public authorities for waste management. We must now be careful about what we throw into this or that trash can.

An element that Jean-Louis did not have in mind when he decided to throw away the little waste that was in his car. “I think there was a pack of cigarettes, two cans and some tissues,” he recalled to RTL Info. He decides to collect them in a plastic bag and throw it in a public trash can.

But a few days later, he received a fine of 350 euros by mail from the municipality of Evere. The municipality’s cleaning services were able to find traces of Jean-Louis because of a letter which was also in the plastic bag thrown in the trash.

Indeed, municipal and regional agents have the role of investigating trash bins in order to look for evidence.

The problem is that its plastic bag was considered “household waste”, therefore intended for household trash bags, and prohibited from being thrown into a public trash can.

“I don’t see the point in throwing a plastic bag in a trash can,” reacts Jean-Louis. “If I had known, I would have spilled the plastic in it.”

The municipality of Evere recalls this on its website: “Remember that these bins are intended to receive small waste such as paper, cans, snack packaging, etc. and are equipped with an ashtray. Under no circumstances are they intended to receive bags of household waste nor to collect clandestine deposits of bulky objects under penalty of an administrative fine of up to €350.”

“Since I was little, I have thrown things in the trash. There, we get penalized because we throw it in a trash can. It’s a bit excessive,” Jean-Louis is scandalized.
