Unlocking the Secrets of Cardiovascular Health: How Blood Pressure and Pulse Wave Velocity Vary Throughout the Week and Seasons

The current study analyzed data related to blood pressure and pulse wave velocity (a barometer of cardiovascular health) collected anonymously between June 2020 and October 2023 for adults with at least 12 readings in one of the two categories.

First observation: pulse wave velocity and blood pressure both increase on Monday morning (+0.03 m/s PWV Monday morning vs. Saturday morning and +1.6 mmHg in systolic pressure and +1.2 mmHg in diastolic pressure Monday vs. Saturday).

Second observation: pulse wave velocity and blood pressure increase in winter (+0.04 m/s PWV, +1.8 mmHg (systolic pressure) and + 1.2 mmHg (diastolic pressure) winter vs. summer). Watch out in this context for a cold Monday morning!

« With these new measurements of arterial parameters, easy to use and with educational value, research has changed the paradigm » indicates Professor Stéphane Laurent, cardiologist at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris and researcher on the subject of pulse wave velocity.

And to add: “ instead of the few dozen subjects included in studies in the 80s, the few thousand in the 2000s, studies can now cover hundreds of thousands of subjects with much better statistical power to advance research.”

For people with jobs, it all starts on Sunday night… The results actually indicate an increase in both pulse wave velocity and blood pressure, potentially linked to anticipatory stress on Monday morning…

Moreover, according to a YouGov study commissioned by Withings and carried out on 30 and 31 January 2024 among 1,007 people, 40% of French people identify Monday as the day they like least, and a third consider themselves stressed on Sunday evening.

For Mathilde Chevalier-Pruvo, Withings philosopher and specialist in active pedagogy: ” Monday will be ruined. We still retain a tremendous amount of freedom in matters of health, especially in being aware of the links between body and mind. Stress works quietly: let’s focus on the present moment, without anticipating the negative, and let’s plan the week as a whole ».

As for Professor Stéphane Laurent, he concludes: “ there are effective and daily ways to prevent cardiovascular accidents. In particular, a balanced diet, regular physical activity, combined with careful monitoring of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol levels ».

For the record, let’s remember that increasingly all these connected health devices are saving lives on a daily basis. Whether it’s Whitings or Apple or Xiaomi devices…

For example, connected watches make it possible to monitor cardiovascular health and perform a medical-grade electrocardiogram, and to detect warning signs of disease by monitoring variations in body temperature.
