Varenicline helps some people with type 2 diabetes quit smoking

To remember

  • Varenicline may help some people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) to quit smoking.

Why is this important?

  • Smoking exacerbates and accelerates the vascular lesions associated with T2DM.

Methodology

  • A trial was conducted with 300 patients with T2DM who smoked at least 10 cigarettes/day and who intended to quit. The latter were randomly assigned to receive varenicline 1 mg twice a day or a placebo for 12 weeks, along with advice to quit smoking, with a follow-up of 40 weeks without treatment.
  • Funding: Pfizer Inc.
