The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela reported this Tuesday of the registration, as a candidate for the presidential elections on July 28 by the Democratic Unity Roundtable (current Democratic Unitary Platform), of Eduardo González Urrutia, after the coalition failed to nominate Corina Yoris, the one chosen as María Corina Machado was unable to compete due to being disqualified.

Elvis Amoroso, president of the CNE, first released the name of Edmundo González Urrutia among the list of registered candidates, and then that of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) party, which absorbed the current Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

The PUD confirmed through a statement the “provisional” registration of Eduardo González Urrutia, and clarified that his elected candidacy could not be registered.

“Given the request that we made from the Unitary Platform to the National Electoral Council, on behalf of the Democratic Unity Table party, that we be granted an extension to register the unitary candidacy, due to the impossibility of doing so within the period provided for not allow us access to the system, we announce to the country that we have been notified by the electoral body that we have been granted a new period of hours to carry out the process,” the PUD said in the statement.

“In this sense, given the clear impossibility of registering the candidacy chosen by democratic factors so far, in order to continue fighting for it and guarantee the registration of said candidacy and stay within the electoral route, we have decided to provisionally register to the President of the Board of Directors of the Democratic Unity Roundtable party, citizen Edmundo González Urrutia, to preserve the exercise of the political rights that correspond to our political organization until we manage to register our unitary candidacy,” he concluded.

The PUD managed to register a candidate after having denounced, throughout the process of presenting candidates – which began last Thursday – impediments to accessing the electoral system and registering a standard bearer, for which it had requested an extension of time from the CNE. three days to “remedy the factual and legal violations that have occurred in the process.”

On Monday – the last day of registration – the coalition stated that it had exhausted all avenues to be able to register Yoris, who is not subject to any disqualification or administrative sanction.

Until this Tuesday, Machado, winner of the October 22 primaries, maintained that her candidate was the historian.

Edmundo González Urrutia is an international analyst, diplomat and former ambassador of Venezuela to Argentina and Algeria.

According to the CNE, with González Urrutia, there are 13 candidates registered for the elections, joining Manuel Rosales, Luis Brito, Luis Ratti, Enrique Márquez, Benjamín Rausseo, Luis Eduardo Martínez, Daniel Ceballos, Antonio Ecarri, Juan Carlos Alvarado , Javier Bertucci, Claudio Fermín and the current head of state, Nicolás Maduro.

Likewise, the president of the electoral body, Elvis Amoroso, indicated that a total of 37 political parties – some in coalition – nominated their candidates during the five days that this process lasted, without “any type of restriction,” according to the rector, despite to the repeated complaints of the main opposition group.

González Urrutia may be replaced starting next Monday, as long as he does not have any administrative sanction or impediment contemplated by law, and the CNE admits the candidacy to replace him.

The formula of nominating a provisional candidate is common in Venezuela and aims to ‘guarantee’ a place on the ballot.
