The bomb scare in Venice, triggered in Piazza San Marco due to two bags abandoned near the bell tower, is over. While the security protocol had already been activated, with the square cordoned off and the bomb squad arriving, the two owners of the ‘suspicious’ bag and trolley showed up on site – said local police commander Marco Agostini – explaining that it was their luggage. It seems that they justified themselves by saying that he had left them there temporarily to be more free to visit the square without carrying burdens.

A bag and a trolley abandoned on the walkways due to high water had triggered the bomb alarm in Piazza San Marco. The police had cordoned off the area between the bell tower and the entrance to the Basilica. From initial indications, the two bags had been noticed shortly before in front of the Doge’s Palace, left unattended by some people. Recalled by local police officers, the owners had moved them, and then abandoned them again near the bell tower of San Marco. Given the international alert, the security alarm was triggered and a large part of the square was closed to passage while waiting for the bomb squad. However, the alarm lasted only a few minutes.
