Since then in the Rosenhuegel Filmstudios 2014 the gates have been closed forever, the domestic film industry is homeless in terms of studio productions. That should change in the future: Two new film production halls are being built in the port of Vienna, as reported at a press conference on Wednesday. The start of construction for two sound stages planned according to international standards with a total floor space of around 3,300 square meters is in the spring.
The project is being implemented by the owner of Hafen Wien, a company from Wien Holding, and the operator HQ7 Studios, a company of CC Real International. Full operation is planned for the beginning of 2024. The Port of Vienna is investing nine million euros for this, reported Kurt Gollowitzer, Managing Director of Wien Holding. The studios are soundproofed. Both studios are equipped in such a way that two productions can be realized independently of each other at the same time. The inner light of the halls is 13 meters.
Rental of production offices
The greatest possible flexibility is to be guaranteed by “extremely stable” gratings below the ceiling, for example for hanging various technology and props. Accessibility through stairs and service walkways (under the roof) is possible. Each of the two halls will be equipped with a large gate to ensure the entry of equipment by truck.
Production offices can be rented in the adjacent HQ7 commercial complex. There will also be opportunities to rent space for costumes, make-up, workshops, studios and storage in order to be able to accompany the entire course of a film project in national and international productions, it was emphasized. A photovoltaic system with 704 panels helps to save energy. The combination of original regional backdrops and a professional studio environment is a plus, said Anu Shanker, Managing Director HQ7 Studios.
“The construction of the HQ7 Studios is the final piece of the puzzle in order to optimally position Vienna as an international production location,” said the City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke (SPÖ) delighted. With the new halls, Austrian filmmakers will be “given space and tools” to take filmmaking to a new level, said Markus Ornig, business spokesman for Neos.
