Vinterljus Linköping 2026: Free Light Festival November 5-29

Linköping’s annual Vinterljus festival returns today, November 5, 2026, transforming the city center into an illuminated, 1.5-kilometer art trail. Running through November 29, the free event features ten primary light installations and a new focus on interactive, playful experiences designed to brighten the dark autumn season.

The light installations are illuminated daily from 16:00 to 22:00. This year, the festival has been extended by one week, with organizers emphasizing a theme of playfulness that incorporates several recently renovated playgrounds along the promenade route. The path begins at Järnvägsparken and winds through S:t Larsgatan, Repslagaregatan, Farbror Melins torg, and S:t Larsparken, before concluding in Trädgårdsföreningen.

International Artists Display Interactive Installations Across Public Squares

The festival showcases a diverse range of works from international artists representing countries including France, Finland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Latvia, alongside local contributions. Among the featured pieces is Order 200 by French artist Emilien Guesnard at Farbror Melins torg, which utilizes 200 marine lamps, fog, and a custom soundscape. In S:t Larsparken, visitors can view Celestial rhythms by the group Those Guys Lighting, while Face by Thomas Voillaume at Trädgårdstorget allows attendees to project their own faces onto a large bust.

Trädgårdsföreningen serves as a central hub for the event, hosting multiple works including Jättekramen by Snowman Agency and En stjärnhimmel av idéer, which was created with the participation of local Linköping students. According to project leader Elin Winberg, organizers prioritized sustainability in their selections, utilizing LED technology to keep the festival’s total energy consumption roughly equivalent to the monthly usage of a single family home. If we get thousands of people to go out and experience Vinterljus, maybe they don’t have the lights on at home, Winberg noted. It is one way to think. Regarding the artistic lineup, Winberg added, It is fun to be able to offer the people of Linköping world-class international light art.

Visitors Experience Weekly Fire Shows and Musical Performances

The official project management confirmed that while the trail is designed to be followed from Järnvägsparken, visitors may begin their walk at any point along the route. The festival, which has become a recurring seasonal fixture organized by the municipality, also includes special events every Saturday: November 7, 14, 21, and 28. These days feature fire shows, storytelling around campfires, and marshmallow roasting between 16:00 and 19:00. Musical guests include Joyvoice and Hanna Rydman on November 7, Linköpings Indiekör on November 14, Lithösen Linköpings studentsångerskor on November 21, and Ad libitum on November 28.

Weather conditions could still affect the outdoor fire performances or visitor turnout throughout the month.
