Violent Theft in Charleroi: Accomplice-Assisted Assault and Trauma on the Rise

On July 4, with the help of an accomplice, Mohamed assaulted an elderly person in a Carolo metro station. To succeed in tearing off the victim’s collar, the duo set up a scheme. “The victim noticed the presence of two individuals with suspicious behavior in front of her. One of the two then pretended to trip over her to snatch her necklace and flee,” says the prosecution.

Faced with the Charleroi Criminal Court, the 28-year-old man denies being the one who snatched the jewel and balances his accomplice. A week later, not far from the Chaussée de Bruxelles in Dampremy, a father and his 13-year-old daughter found Mohamed on their bike ride. For this second theft with violence, the defendant admits having taken the gold chain belonging to the father, not his wallet. “I even returned the chain to the person. I was not in my normal state because I had consumed alcohol and cocaine”, defends Mohamed. The height of irony, the latter claims to have started these consumptions following an attack of which he was the victim several months ago…

Traumatized, the 13-year-old girl who accompanied her dad during the attack tried to intervene to stop Mohamed. “Today, she has trouble walking alone in the street as she begins to take public transport to go to school,” says Me Baudart, her lawyer.

Landed in Belgium in 2020, after fleeing violence in the Middle East, Mohamed has no criminal record and will receive his first court conviction on September 14. An exemplary sentence of 15 months in prison is requested by the substitute Broucke. On the defense side, we hope to obtain a simple reprieve.
