Berlin singer-songwriter Bernadette La Hengst calls her new album “Visionary Emptiness”. The title came to her while researching the coal mining region of Lausitz, where she met members of the national Sorbian minority and spoke to them about the wounded landscape.
Many tunnels were flooded, artificial lakes were created, and coal is still being mined in other areas. It is an area that has fallen out of time and reality. The result is a love song to the “visionary emptiness”.
The place of work for her socially critical, sometimes rebellious, always sympathetic albums is Berlin, where she has also led the Statistics Choir since the pandemic. Rehearsals are deliberately carried out in the loudest place in the city, Alex (Alexanderplatz).
