Warner Bros. Discovery Confirms Hogwarts Legacy 2 Is in Development

Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development, moving the highly anticipated sequel from industry speculation to concrete company plans after years of massive commercial success for the franchise.

Warner Bros. Outlines Financial Expectations

Parent company Warner Bros. confirmed the project in a letter to shareholders, detailing disciplined investments in fewer, higher-conviction titles. Executives noted that games serve as an important growth lever for the corporation following recent product launches such as LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire. The letter further detailed that these releases marked the initial phase of a focused strategy centered squarely around four key billion-dollar franchises.

We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.

The original Hogwarts Legacy launched on February 10, 2023, carrying an ESRB rating of T for Teen due to blood, fantasy violence, mild language, and the use of alcohol. Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros., the single-player experience runs on Unreal Engine 4. It shattered records by selling more than 22 million copies in its first year in the U.S. alone, outperforming that year’s Call of Duty entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, before ultimately surpassing 40 million sales worldwide.

Executives Coordinate Franchise Strategy

Company executives spent years signaling that a follow-up is central to future operations, especially as the company grappled with misfires like MultiVersus, high-profile cancellations such as Wonder Woman, and flops including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Back in 2024, WBD CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels stated:

Obviously, a successor to ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.

That priority is anchored to a restructuring. In 2025, JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games for Warner Bros. Discovery, pointed to a disappointing 2024 for the games division and outlined a strict focus on four major pillars: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC, which he specified is primarily Batman when it comes to single-character-led games but may include select other opportunities as the new DCU gets built.

Corporate synergy also plays a part in development timelines. During 2024, David Haddad, then-president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety that the games team was coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series coming later that year. Observers note that with major industry gatherings on the horizon—such as Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December—an early look at the sequel could surface ahead of a projected 2027 or 2028 release window.
