What is the origin of the theory and what could it explain?

He Butterfly effect is a theory studied by the mathematician and meteorologist Edward Lorenz (1917-2008)., to which he dedicated much of his life. In short, he stipulates that the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Hong Kong can trigger a natural catastrophe in the United States. But what is true about it?

The Also called “chaos theory” seeks to explain the global systems that modify the climate and how they can affect different complex social phenomena, as in a cause and effect relationship, as specified National Geographic. A simple example may be a tornado in a city that has never experienced one.

The universe is so complex that it can be unpredictable

As Lorenz said, the cause of these types of conditions are small changes that can lead to great consequences in the short or medium term. The root is very simple: the universe is so complex that it can be unpredictable.

Other examples could be the direction of the wind that diverts the course of a storm and cause damage. Or a variation in the population of an animal species that can generate a serious impact on the ecosystem.

A few years ago, this theory may have seemed like science fiction. However, with the advancement of science and climate studies we know that many small changes that occurred in the environment in recent decades ended up substantially affecting ecosystems.

Lorenz pointed out that physics and mathematics are the key tools to explain the butterfly effect. We now understand that the small decisions we make as humanity or even individually can generate a different result than intended in our lives or in nature.
