How do you sell 25,000 sheep? This question may arise when buying a large farm in Patagonia, southern Chile, to turn into a nature reserve. The answer is: very slowly. The number of animals increases first before it decreases. A few months after the purchase of what was then Chile’s third-largest farm, there were already 50,000 sheep, says Carolina Morgado, head of the nature conservation organization Rewilding Chile, who and her team faced this task around 20 years ago. Attempting to get rid of the animals quickly would not only harm local markets, but also alienate the population, who see animal husbandry as part of their tradition.
