Saint John the Hesychast lived in the 8th century AD. and was a student of Saint Gregory the Decapolitan (honored November 20). From a young age, he was jealous of the ascetic life and went to Saint Gregory the Decapolitan, perhaps to Olympus, becoming a monk and learning about the monastic state.
His obedience to his teacher was infamous, and for that reason Saint Gregory blessed and glorified God. After the death of his teacher, following his example, after touring foreign lands, he then came to Jerusalem, where he worshiped the Holy Land. There the springs of pious devotion were most cultivated within him, and his devotion to God took on new strength and fire.
Saint Ioannis retired to the Charitonos monastery, where he slept in peace.
