“Why Michael Niavarani Advocates Against Subsidized Theaters: Insights from a Private Theater Maker”

There are many reasons not to go to the theater, says Michael Niavarani. One of them: That it is often “insanely bland” and incomprehensible. The private theater maker takes a stand against subsidized large stages – in a conversation in which Niavarani, Julia Edtmeier and Sigrid Hauser do not always agree.

Viktor Gernot’s Praterbühne will be discontinued this year because demand is too low. Your “Theater im Park”, also originally a Corona project, will continue. Does Vienna only have room for a multi-genre open-air stage, Mr. Niavarani?

Michael Niavarani: There can only be one (laughs). No: It is sad for all of us – from the highly subsidized Burgtheater to the smallest cabaret – when a theater closes. Even if we should see it as competition: Every theater that closes affects the whole scene.

You are also a theater director, Ms. Edtmeier. How is the Bronski & Grünberg doing?

Julia Edtmeier: Really excellent. This season is the very best since the beginning, it’s insane. After Corona it suddenly worked again, everyone who came earlier came back – and even more. I, too, have never felt other houses to be competition. On the contrary: every theater that is doing well encourages more people to go to the theatre.
