[국제]U.S. and Russia cross boarding of astronauts on the International Space Station… ‘Cooperation according to need’ amid antagonism

[앵커]

There is only one area in which cooperation between the two countries is taking place as the conflict between the US and Russia has become more serious than ever since the invasion of Ukraine.

The International Space Station is that, because without cooperation it would be impossible to operate itself.

Reporter Lee Dong-heon reports.

On the 5th local time, a SpaceX rocket was launched to transport astronauts from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the International Space Station.

The rocket was carried by Russian female astronaut Anna Kikina.

Two weeks ago, American astronaut Frank Rubio went to the space station aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft launched from Kazakhstan.

This is in accordance with the agreement signed in July last year so that the United States and Russia can use each other’s spacecraft to secure a means of transportation in case an emergency occurs on the space station.

Such cooperation between the United States and Russia has practical needs in addition to the symbolic meaning that it will not completely abandon space cooperation even during the Ukraine war.

This is because Russia is in charge of the operation of the space station, including posture control, and the United States is in charge of life support such as power supply.

Russia announced in May that it would withdraw completely from the space station after 2024, but is now talking about cooperation.

[세르게이 크리칼레프 / 러시아 연방우주공사 국장 : 협력에 관해서라면 40여 년 전부터 시작해 왔고 앞으로도 상상할 수 있는 만큼 오래 협력해 갈 것입니다.]

The United States also said it wants to extend the agreement.

[조엘 몬탈바노 / 나사 국제우주정거장 담당 : 우리 계획은 우주정거장 운영을 연장하면서 협력을 이어가 2024년 지나서까지 협정을 유지해 가는 것입니다.]

In international relations, it is a good example that interdependence, not the superiority of one side, can bring peace and cooperation.
