A code of ethics will be written for Latvian teachers

Inga Vanaga, Chairman of LIZDA, emphasizes that issues related to professional ethics and behavior, mutual communication, as well as relationships with colleagues, students and their parents are becoming increasingly relevant. This is evidenced by the increasing incidence of moral, ethical, physical and sexual violence in educational institutions.

With the help of the code of ethics, LIZDA wants to promote the “legal, honest and high-quality performance” of teachers’ work responsibilities and improve the work culture of teachers. It will define the ethical principles and standards of ethical behavior of educators, as well as the rights, responsibilities and tasks associated with them.

“Interpersonal relationships in the work environment should be based on respect, sincerity, honesty, responsibility and freedom,” Vanaga noted, emphasizing that the educator is an example for society as a whole, especially for young people.

The future code of ethics includes issues such as values and basic principles of professional ethics. It also talks about the principles of ethical behavior, collegiality, cooperation with parents and children.

The Code of Ethics also addresses “issues close to today’s realities.” For example, a teacher, aware of the presence of representatives of his profession in the area of increased public attention, must act at work and outside of work in such a way as not to harm himself, the prestige of the teaching profession, the educational institution, local government, the state and society as a whole.

The future document also talks about management ethics – issues that are promoted or not tolerated by representatives of the founder of the educational institution and the management of the educational institution. The draft Code of Ethics includes a clause on situations of conflict of interest and the procedure for resolving them.
