a reference establishment for the management of back pathologies

Anatomy, rhythm of life, genetic predisposition… There are many factors that can lead to back pathologies. Faced with the difficulties of diagnosis and the multitude of treatment possibilities, the IMED (Mediterranean Institute of the Back) stands out as an establishment specializing in pathologies of the spine.

Designed and offered by

A specialized place for better care

The Mediterranean Institute of the Back was created in 2019 by Drs. Giorgi and Faure in response to the growing demand for specialist care for back disorders. The objective for these two specialist surgeons? To be able to meet the demand of all patients, from diagnosis to treatment, from a medical and surgical point of view.

IMED centralizes the areas of expertise necessary for these pathologies (medical, surgical, rehabilitation, diagnosis by imaging) in order to to offer the patient a complete course and a defined clinical path that meets their needs in one and only place.

The care pathway for spinal pathologies is often winding and complex. The difficulty of precise diagnosis and the choice of the right specialist give rise to many disparate consultations; it is not always easy for the patient to obtain a clear and complete summary concerning his pathology. Thanks to its multidisciplinary team, IMED makes the management of back disorders more accessible, coordinated and rapid.

Lumbosciatica in young subjects: surgical solutions exist

While most consultations for back disorders and pathologies result in medical treatment, certain disabling pathologies may be offered medical treatment. surgical treatments when the other possibilities are no longer sufficient to improve the patient’s comfort of life.

This is particularly the case of disc pathology, grouping together discopathy and herniated disc. It is a pathology of the young subject, linked to the destruction of disc tissue and which can lead to lumbosciatica, that is to say disabling pain in the back and legs. When there are no signs of neurological severity such as paralysis or unbearable daily pain, medical treatment is sufficient at first.

However, the most advanced cases may benefit from surgery. It can be a micro-discectomy when only a fragment of the damaged disc is responsible for the symptoms or a disc replacement procedure when the intervertebral disc is too damaged and no longer performs its stabilizing function. Unfortunately, reluctance to offer such operations in a patient under the age of 50, to which is added the lack of clear and informed information, sometimes delays decision-making. However, surgical management is well codified and compatible with a rapid return to home and daily activities.

IMED, whose improvement of the quality of life for patients is a priority mission, takes it to heart to offer the most suitable therapeutic solution possible to the patient’s functional requirements, and not to allow chronic disabling pain to set in. It should be mentioned that the therapeutic process is long, and that an operation of this magnitude is the culmination of a necessary and indispensable multidisciplinary reflection process.

The competence of medical specialists and cutting-edge real-time 3D imaging technologies position the institute as major player in spine surgery.

Towards decision support technologies?

IMED is involved in research and publication of scientific articles for the French Society of Spine Surgerywhich demonstrates its commitment to remain at the forefront of the latest advances in the treatment of spinal pathologies.

To compensate for the lack of medical data for patients undergoing spine surgery, the institute addresses the assessment of the patient’s functional disability in an innovative and promising wayfor 2 years now. Prior to their consultation, patients fill out a general pain questionnaire, allowing professionals to assess their condition and abilities before they come.

The goal? Analyze the results of the questions and the treatments followed following the consultation in order to identify a general trend, and to try to predict upstream the need to resort to medical, surgical or re-educational treatment, making it possible to respond more precisely to the functional problem of each patient
